If you are your most important asset, how are you caring for yourself? Some clients question the cost of my classes, even though I offer options for those who are truly in financial need. Yet these same people may be living with pain or balance problems and searching for solutions while spending $50 or more each week on hair appointments, manicures, golf, dining out, or other distractions. Those expenses can quickly exceed the cost of my classes. Although they have explored practices that might help, they have not consistently invested the time and attention those practices require. Investing in myself and my own practice helps me serve my clients and grow my business.

For years, I floundered, searched for answers, complained, and felt lost. My growth was, and still is, a journey. After experimenting with different practices, I found both focus and a lifeline in T’ai Chi Chih® and Donna Eden’s Energy Medicine. These practices changed me. Wanting to understand more, I returned to university for a master’s degree in Holistic Health. I was investing in myself, never imagining that I would eventually become a teacher. That is a story in itself.
Once I became an accredited teacher in several practices, I felt responsible for continuing my education. I could have relied on the tools I already had, but giving my students my best requires me to remain a student by continually learning, questioning, and seeking new perspectives.
I continue to strengthen my skills by reading about and practicing mindfulness practices, taking classes, and exchanging ideas with other teachers. In-person conferences add something distinct: concentrated access to research, practice, and professional connection. Some are more valuable than others. My top choices are the Osher conferences, especially those offered through Harvard Medical School, and the National Qigong Association conferences, both of which I have attended several times.
What makes these conferences exceptional are the following characteristics:
-A well-organized event with a clear schedule
-Variety of well-known presenters who provide in-depth research or lead a practice
-Balance of lectures, demonstrations, and workshops
-Time to connect with presenters and attendees- networking is important

-Pace of event includes enough breaktime, easy access to water and healthy snacks
-Resources to tap into beyond the event and recordings of event
-Creates an experience that inspires and motivates
I cannot overstate the value of networking. One of the best ways to make a lasting impression is to introduce someone to a person who may interest or help them. It is good karma, it benefits everyone involved, and that generosity may eventually connect you with someone who can help you. Collect business cards and continue the conversation after the event. Although I prefer in-person conferences, virtual events can also create meaningful connections.
I was especially impressed by fellow NQA member and Qigong teacher Vicki Dello Joio. During the reason NQA Conference held at Denver, CO she was an engaging presenter, and she extended the conference experience by offering attendees a free Zoom gathering afterward. The session built community, introduced participants to her practice without a hard sell, and invited everyone to share their own work.
For me, attending a conference is worth the investment. Each event helps me become a better teacher, broadens my perspective on other practices, and shows me what I can learn from them. The research strengthens my understanding of the body and the health benefits of these practices, while networking opens doors to new possibilities. Just as important, I enjoy spending time with like-minded people who want to help others. The expense is significant, but so is the return: I come home better equipped to serve my clients, strengthen my practice, and continue investing in my most important asset: myself.
