For over two decades, the International Chinese Martial Arts Championship (ICMAC) has been a beacon for practitioners and enthusiasts of all Chinese martial arts, drawing participants from across the globe to compete, learn, and celebrate the rich heritage of these ancient disciplines. In an exclusive interview with Sifu Nick Scrima, the founder and driving force behind ICMAC, we delve into the history, challenges, and triumphs of this prestigious event. I also realize that his deep passion for promoting the Chinese martial arts. He did not take credit for the success of the tournaments. He is extremely humble and refuses to have his photo be used for this article.

From Bayfront to Caribe Royale: The Evolution of ICMAC

The roots of ICMAC trace back to the Bayfront Center in St. Petersburg, Florida, where it began as a modest gathering before blossoming into a grand spectacle. Following the closure of the Bayfront Center, the tournament found a new home in Orlando, attracted by the city’s ample convention hotels and vibrant atmosphere. Over the years, venues like the Gaylord Palms and now the Caribe Royale have played host to countless martial artists, fostering a sense of community and camaraderie. Ten of thousands of practitioners have participated in the tournaments in the past 25 years. Some competed as kids and now become coaches or judges. The tradition just carry on.

A Testament to Tradition: ICMAC’s Place in History

In the realm of Chinese martial arts, ICMAC stands as a pillar of tradition and excellence. While not the oldest, it holds its own as one of the most revered tournaments in North America, drawing participants from diverse backgrounds and styles. A Lifetime of Dedication: Nick’s Martial Arts Journey

Nick’s own journey in martial arts spans over five decades, marked by a relentless pursuit of knowledge and a deep respect for his teachers. From Mizong Luohan to Tai Chi, his diverse training has shaped not only his skills but also his philosophy on the role of competition in martial arts. He firmly believes that competition is a motivating factor that fosters a strong student enrollment, builds camaraderie among students, and provides goals. This enhances interest in martial arts beyond, and more effectively, than a ranking system. That promoting a Chinese Martial Arts tournament brings recognition to the arts, especially since there are countless different styles featured in a competition.

Beyond the Arena: ICMAC’s Impact and Influence

ICMAC transcends mere competition, serving as a platform for education, networking, and cultural exchange. Seminars, showcases, and awards ceremonies enrich the tournament experience, fostering a deeper appreciation for Chinese martial arts and the individuals who dedicate their lives to its practice.

The Anatomy of Success: Behind the Scenes at ICMAC

Behind the glitz and glamour of the tournament lies months of meticulous planning and coordination. Nick sheds light on the logistical challenges of organizing such a monumental event, from securing venues to recruiting volunteers. Despite the hurdles, the unwavering support of the martial arts community fuels his passion and commitment. Each year over 100 judges and many volunteers motivate Nick to keep going.

Navigating Challenges: Adapting in a Changing Landscape

Before the 9/11 terrorist attacks in 2001, ICMAC consistently had 25 or more countries participate in the ICMAC Orlando tournament every year. The incident changed that, and many countries still have difficulty obtaining visas to enter the U.S. to participate.  Then the COVID-19 pandemic brought unprecedented challenges, forcing many martial art schools close and the cancellation of tournaments. Yet, through resilience and adaptability, ICMAC resumed in 2021 and enjoyed a huge turnout last year.
