Grandmaster Wang Yan is a world-renowned Qigong master and doctor who uses Medical Qigong to treat patients of all diseases worldwide. Recently she was invited to present and give workshops at the 17th World Congress on Qigong, Tai Chi, and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). She generously shared much revered knowledge including a simple Qigong practice that can turn back time and make people young again.

Qigong is an ancient Chinese healing art with over four thousand years of history. There are a plethora of forms for diverse purposes. Medical Qigong, specifically, is designed to cure diseases and/or to prevent sicknesses. Generally speaking, there are two types of Medical Qigong: one is a healer emitting (or projecting) Qi (or life energy) to a patient to cure diseases and the other is a healer teaching a patient how to use a Qigong form to heal oneself.

Born in China, Grandmaster Wang studied Tai Chi (Taiji) Chuan – which is a form of Qigong — at a tender age. She is a talented martial artist who has won numerous medals and trophies. Owing to her own curiosity and many opportunities, she was able to study with several experts in Traditional Chinese Medicine and Medical Qigong. She became an herbalist as well as doctor to treat patients. Grandmaster Wang believes that it is better to teach people how to fish rather than simply giving them fish unless required by the condition. Therefore, she usually teaches patients how to use Medical Qigong. According to her, most Medical Qigong forms are easy to practice. The difficult part is the breathing and mindfulness. To treat different diseases, people need the correct instruction to breathe properly. For example, cancer patients need to inhale twice before they exhale once while doing walking Qigong. Most of the Medical Qigong forms are designed to target a specific organ or internal area of the body. For example, a skin problem is the symptom of an autoimmune disorder. Only well-trained Chinese doctors know the source of the problem. Grandmaster Wang would instruct which area/organ to focus the mind on while doing a certain Medical Qigong form because Qigong is a mind-body-breathing regimen.

As an outstanding martial artist, she was recruited by the Chinese government to travel globally to perform. People in the Netherlands were dazzled by her knowledge and skills. They deeply appreciated her and persuaded her to stay. Eventually, she decided to immigrate to Amsterdam after retirement. But her retirement life was extremely busy and full of miracles. According to the European and Chinese media, she has cured tens of thousands with all kinds of physical conditions, i.e. obesity, depression, diabetes, migraines, chronic pains, insomnia, psoriasis, tinnitus, and even cancer not to mention she has helped thousands quit smoking and drinking.

During the 17th World Congress held in San Francisco, CA, she held a few workshops to share several Medical Qigong techniques. At age 80, she had a full head of naturally black hair. She suffered from no jetlag and energetically participated in all the activities. At the Opening Ceremony, she shared a Medical Qigong formula to rejuvenate the body and mind so people can return to the childhood energy level. There are three parts of this Medical Qigong form: meditation, breathing techniques, and gentle exercises. You can watch the attached video for the explanation and demonstration.

Meditation:

People should put hands in front of Dan Tian, with eyes gently closed and breathe through the nose naturally for two minutes. This will provide an amazing result of deep relaxation. The key is that the mind should focus on Dan Tian and not think about anything at all.

Breathing techniques:

Inhale through the nose to bring hands above the waist and exhale through the nose to relax hands on the waist. Inhale again slowly and raise the heels at the same time. Hold breath while lowering the heels a little bit and contracting the anus and the private area for 6 or 7 times, better yet 8 times. Exhale through the nose slowly to lower the heels down onto the floor. Inhale through the nose quickly and exhale through mouth and make noise. Repeat the last part three times.

Gentle Exercises:

The first exercise: kick one foot at time while swinging the arms. Repeat ten times and change to another side. You can hold on to a chair or table for stability if needed. The second exercise: Raise both arms overhead and raise the heels up; then let the gravity takes as you drop down the heels and swing the arms down. Repeat ten times.

She advised people to do this Qigong program three times a day in the morning for the first week and take a two-minute break in between sets, then 2 times in the second week, and then once a day from the third week on. And maybe you can have rambunctious energy as your three-year-old or horse around with your grand kid.

  1. 李師父、我不知道妳是從台灣來的。 我 1973 – 1975 年住在台灣。

As I wrote above, I didn’t know that you were from Taiwan. I lived there from 1973–1975, during the period of martial law that you mentioned, and I would like to congratulate you and say just how much I respect you for your bravery when you stood up to that general.

      1. I’m sorry. I intended to post my comments on your “7years, 500 articles” blog entry.

  2. I am 70 years old and my lungs are covered with asbestos from working in a factory when I was in my 20’s. I also am diabetic with foot nephropathy. Is there anything that I can do to help with my conditions? I live in Ontario Canada and the only tai chi is taoist tai chi and there is no Qi Gong in this community.

    1. Terry, I am really sorry for your condition. I am not sure that Dr. Wang Yan can help you with the problems. But she is capable of treating many unsolvable medical symptoms. In general, Tai Chi and Qigong provide excellent health benefits. Tai Chi is a form of Qigong because it enhances the Qi quality as well as quality. Taoist Tai Chi should be good if the teacher is qualified. You can give a try and see how your health in general is improved. Good luck!

      1. thank you for answering me. I have talked to a number of the students here and am not impressed with what I hear.

      2. I normally don’t recommend people just studying Tai Chi from a DVD. But in your condition, you can try it. YMAA.com has published many good DVDs. You can try to find one that suits you.
